Salkaara Restaurant Review

Salkaara was bustling when we visited on a Thursday evening, filled with tables of couples, friends and families enjoying exquisite Keralan cuisine. The restaurant opened its doors in Henleaze, just off Westbury on Trym and close to the Downs, following the success of the first restaurant in Cardiff – one meal here, and it’s easy to see why it’s proven popular enough to warrant a second Cardiff restaurant and a Banbury site.

The menu focuses on Keralan dishes, using chef Santhosh’s passion for his culinary heritage to delight Bristolian diners. Kerala is a coastal region so you can look forward to plenty of stunning seafood dishes on the vibrant, diverse menu. You’ll also find more beef and pork dishes than in many Indian restaurants – there’s something for everyone at Salkaara.

The attentive manager guided us through the menu, giving us recommendations and pointing out the restaurant’s specialty dishes. We began with ice-cold beer and poppadoms, before sampling the beef chilli fry and konju varuthathu, a tiger prawn dish we devoured. Next, we chose the creamy lamb shank nalli korma and one of Salkaara’s most popular dishes, meen pollichathu – fish of the day in a sumptuous Keralan masala, wrapped in banana leaves. Of course, we couldn’t resist side orders of garlic naans and thoran, a traditional vegetable side dish that proved the perfect accompaniment. Next time, we want to try konju manga – a specialty of prawns in a spicy coconut and mango sauce. The staff at Salkaara are passionate and informed, so the recommendations we were given were excellent – it was great to broaden our horizons.

For dessert, we sampled three delicate dishes: tandoori pineapple, a rose crème brûlée, and samosas filled with chocolate ganache and flaked almonds, served with caramelised bananas and vanilla ice cream. Every dish was beautifully presented, elevating our dining experience – this is not your standard curry house.

We left Salkaara raving about our new favourite dishes and vowing to return soon to continue our exploration of Keralan cuisine. We’re lucky to have such an authentic gem in Bristol.
