Salkaara Street Review

Arriving at Salkaara Street on a Friday evening, we were charmed by the riot of colour, aroma, and sound from the moment we crossed the threshold. Poppy Indian music plays in the background and murals and Bollywood movie posters cover the walls. The floor is painted like a street, giving a nod to the menu’s influence – while Salkaara, in Westbury-on-Trym, is a more traditional curry house, Salkaara Street is all about street food.

The menu showcases incredible street food from all over India, with Keralan influences to highlight chef Santhosh’s heritage. There’s something for every occasion on this menu, be it a sit-down meal over a few drinks or a quick snack with a coffee. We started our evening with a perfectly chilled pint of Cobra and a refreshing mango juice alongside poppodums and a chutney tray.

While perusing the menu, we spotted several masala dosas leaving the kitchen and as soon as ours arrived, we understood why it’s so popular. The crispy South Indian rice crepe filled with spiced potatoes came with sambar and chutney and was unlike anything I’ve tried in an Indian restaurant before. This trend continued with the porotta beef combo – oh-so-tender Keralan-style beef fry with the flakiest, most buttery paratha. Most of the tiffins feature some kind of bread, making them perfect for a lunchtime visit.

After sampling the delicious egg pakora, an excellent snack, we moved on to the curry. We were sorely tempted by a spicy and sour prawn curry but opted for the lamb street curry. The street curries are prepared in typical Southern Indian fashion, resulting in more prominent flavours – we were not disappointed. The lamb was beautifully tender and the flavours so full.

As we finished our drinks and soaked up the warm, welcoming atmosphere of Salkaara Street, we were already planning our next visit. There’s still so much to try on this superbly curated menu, from the thalis and tandoori dishes to the Indo-Chinese specials. We can’t wait to return with friends and continue our street food discovery.
