The Famous Royal Navy Volunteer Review

The Famous Royal Navy Volunteer has become a Bristol institution over the years. Its position on King Street puts it at the heart of the city’s pub scene, but The Volley stands out for its incredible offering of carefully selected – and ever-changing – craft beer and top-notch food.

It’s a pub with the kind of welcoming atmosphere that sees a quick lunchtime bite turn effortlessly into an afternoon spent on the roof terrace and an evening in front of the fire. There’s always something on at The Volley, with live music every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night, and a great set-up for sports.

We visited just a few days before the Euros and were able to sample the Volley Platter, which was first introduced for the Six Nations and has been brought back by popular demand. The platter is a feast: chicken wings and strips, mozzarella bites, fries, onion rings, and ham croquettes are all served with a selection of sauces. At £22, it’s incredibly reasonable, perfect for two to share while enjoying a few pints. They’re also introducing a slider special for £15, and a burger and pint deal for £18 – we can vouch for the excellent falafel burger, which is perfect for veggies and vegans.

Part of what sets The Volley apart is its passionate kitchen team. The food is elevated from standard pub grub, crafted using the best possible ingredients from the surrounding area.
Almost everything that leaves the kitchen is made in-house, and it shows. Time and care go into every dish – the gravy for the popular Sunday lunch starts bubbling away on Tuesdays.

The extra effort taken by the team means The Volley is a great pub for private events, whether it’s for a summer party or a Christmas do. The games room, function room, and roof terrace can all be hired for events with a dedicated bartender – the roof terrace is a great spot for a barbecue. There’s a full calendar of events to enjoy, too – the Sour and Cider Fests in July are bound to be popular. We’ll be back soon.
