A Bristol Institution Reborn – Mayflower Chinese Restaurant

After more than 20 years serving up some of the most beloved Chinese food in Bristol, Mayflower Chinese Restaurant has found a new home earlier this year, and what a transformation it is. Forced to move from its iconic Haymarket location, Mayflower reopened in February in a bright, modern new premises in Broadmead, just opposite Primark. And let’s be clear: the heart and soul of this Bristol favourite is not only intact, it’s thriving.

The new space is a breath of fresh air. With floor-to-ceiling windows, sleek contemporary décor, and well-positioned electric blinds that adjust with the light, it’s a vibrant and welcoming setting for everything from a casual lunch to a celebratory feast. But as always, it’s the food that steals the show.

Owner Chi is clearly passionate about his craft – and it shows. He’s obsessive (in the best way) about sourcing only the highest-quality ingredients, whether it’s melt-in-your-mouth roast duck, fresh market seafood, or the perfect noodle for a smoky beef ho fun. His dedication to authenticity and flavour is what’s made Mayflower a household name among locals and foodies alike.

The menu is a glorious mix of Cantonese classics and lesser-known regional gems. The salt and pepper squid is addictively crisp, the dim sum is delicate and bursting with flavour, and the steamed seabass in ginger and soy is a dish that would impress even the toughest critic. With generous portions and very reasonable prices, it’s the kind of place you come back to again and again.

Even in its stylish new setting, Mayflower hasn’t lost its charm or its energy. It’s still lively, still packed with regulars, and still one of the best dining spots in the city.

Mayflower isn’t just a restaurant – it’s a part of Bristol’s food heritage, lovingly updated for a new chapter. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a first-timer, you’ll leave impressed, satisfied, and already planning your next visit.
