    Pier of the Year 2021

    Clevedon Pier was opened in 1869 to receive paddle steamer passengers from Devon and Wales. Today it is a focal point for events in Clevedon and once again you can take boat trips aboard the paddle ship Waverley and the MV Balmoral.

    Our new Visitor Centre won the Historic England People’s Choice Award in a glittering ceremony held at the Palace Theatre in the West End of London.

    It is the only Grade 1 listed pier.

    The Day the Pier Fell Down
    See what happened on the day the pier fell down through the lens of a Victorian mutoscope.

    Shipping Links
    View shipping information in real time. This unique attraction allows visitors to watch vessels moving up and down the Bristol Channel on a digital screen. Information such as a ship’s name, it’s size, the port of origin and the destination can be accessed in real time by touching any of the moving images showing on the display. Viewers can even see a close up image of the vessel when a photo is available on the system.

    The Severn Estuary
    Learn about the fish and plant life which thrives in the sea and shore around the pier. Discover the different rocks which make up the shorelines of the estuary.

    The Tide
    Crank the handle and see how the tide moves in the estuary. Watch the bobbing boat.

    Fishy Facts and the Fishy Trail
    Identify the species that live in the estuary. Follow the trail up to the pierhead and rub the brasses to create an image to take home.

    Clevedon Town
    Drop an object onto a sensor to discover information about the people who shaped the town and the places that make Clevedon special.

    The People’s Pier
    Listen to John Betjeman talking about the pier and watch the story of the campaign to save the pier. Hear locals talk about the Pier’s ‘rock and roll’ years.

    Feat of Engineering
    Explore how the pier was built and what it took to repair it after the catastrophic collapse in the 1970s.
