Description

Rhythm Utsav – Celebrating 10 years!

Celebration of Indian classical music and dance, nurturing and showcasing the talents of children and young people
Rhythm Utsav is Bristol’s annual celebration of Indian classical music and dance, dedicated to nurturing and showcasing the talents of children and young people from across the city.

This year is especially significant as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Rhythm Utsav! A decade of inspiring young artists, nurturing emerging talent, and sharing the richness of Indian classical arts with audiences across Bristol.

Rhythm Utsav was conceived with the vision of supporting, showcasing and promoting Indian classical music and dance in the city. Since 2017, the event has been presented in partnership with Asian Arts Agency, a leading Bristol-based arts organisation that has played a key role in supporting the festival’s development and helped establish it as an important part of Bristol’s cultural landscape.

At the heart of Rhythm Utsav is its commitment to children and young people. Each year, students from music and dance schools across Bristol are given the unique opportunity to perform alongside acclaimed professional artists, celebrating their dedication, creativity and passion while gaining invaluable performance experience.

The first half of this evening’s concert features three outstanding master musicians in a captivating exploration of rhythm, melody, and texture. This special performance has been commissioned by Asian Arts Agency.

RN ‘Bangalore’ Prakash is a celebrated mridangam and ghatam artist who performs internationally, renowned for his impeccable accompaniment in Carnatic concerts. While deeply rooted in Indian classical music, he is equally admired for his versatility, creativity and adventurous musical style.

Ratheeshkumar Manoharan is an acclaimed violinist who began performing at an early age and has built an international career as both a soloist and accompanist. A graduate of the Universities of Jaffna and Madras, he has inspired young musicians for many years.

Sri ‘Venuganamani’ Pitchaiappah Gnanavarathan is a Carnatic flautist, teacher and composer. Trained by leading maestros including Dr. N. Ramani, he has performed worldwide as both a soloist and accompanist, while dedicating more than 30 years to nurturing the next generation of Carnatic musicians.

Following the interval, the spotlight turns to the festival’s stars – 80 children and young people from right across Bristol – who will present a vibrant showcase of Indian classical music and dance, celebrating both their achievements and the enduring future of these art forms.

“Their expressive movements, elegant formations and vibrant energy brought the richness of Indian classical dance to life.” (Rajasthan Works)
